Strengths are potentials for excellence that can be enhanced via awareness and willpower (self-effort). They are your personal superpowers.

How Do Strengths Support Self Confidence?

When you are in a state of self-confidence, you are focused on possibility. You are focused on your strengths, resources, and capacity.

When you’re in a state of self-doubt, you are focused on uncertainty, potential dangers, lacks, and weaknesses.

The more you know and use your strengths and uniqueness in your life, the more confident and capable you will feel. You’ll be living more authentically. You’ll naturally have more motivation, resilience, and flow. You won’t need validation from others, because you trust in your abilities, even if others actively doubt and discourage you.

Here are some examples.

  • Perseverance and patience give you confidence that you will work through any problems that show up.
  • Creativity gives you confidence that you’ll think of out-of-the-box solutions to your challenges.
  • Vitality and enthusiasm allow you to show up with a special mojo and energy, exuding confidence.
  • Building connections gives you confidence that you can tap into a wealth of resources and support.
  • Sincerity means you can trust that others will see your openness as a sign of courage and confidence.
Exercise: How to Find Your Strengths

Spend an hour working through the following questions. Be patient if you encounter resistance or lack of clarity; you might need to stay with a question for a while until things become clearer.

  • What are some things that you can do easily where others seem to struggle?
  • What would people who know well you say is your greatest quality?
  • What activities naturally take you to a state of flow?
  • What strengths most helped you overcome challenging situations in life?
  • What are three things that you most love about yourself?
  • What qualities have allowed you to get good results in your life?
  • What is unique about you?
  • What strengths naturally come from your weaknesses?
  • What experiences, background, and values have shaped you?
  • What achievements are you most proud of in your life?

Reflect on your answers. Note which strengths came up multiple times, if in different forms.

Go Forward in Confidence!

Rely on your strengths. Love the qualities that make you you, even if they are not all considered the strengths of choice in your field. Remember that while you can develop new strengths, for the purpose of feeling confident and empowered, the best way to start is owning and leaning on your core strengths.
