This week I turned 40 years old—a significant landmark in life. Ever since I was 14, meditation, wisdom, and personal growth have been the greatest focus of my life. In this pair of articles, Part 1 here and Part 2 now available, I share 40 lessons I’ve learned in my journey.
These are not the ultimate summary of my work. They are simply the first lessons that came to mind when I thought of writing this article, considering what most of my readers would appreciate. I hope you will find some of them useful in your journey.
Existential Lessons
1. You need a strong sense of purpose in life
Having clear and heartfelt aspirations gives a sense of meaning and focus to our lives. It also pushes us to grow to our greatest potential. Happiness, strength, and resilience are the byproducts of purpose.
2. Your early life experiences shaped you more than you imagine
It is easy to underestimate how much we were shaped by our parents, upbringing, and early life experiences. Most people take years to really appreciate that.
It’s important to fully see this, because knowledge is power. With the awareness of our conditioning, we are able to separate ourselves from the voices of others inside of us, the better to find out who we are—or who we want to be.
3. Reinvent your identity
Our identity, or self-image, is the most powerful force in our life. It got formed subconsciously, when we couldn’t know better, but we have the ability to re-shape our identity and completely reinvent ourselves. This is at the core of self-transformation.
In order to achieve your life’s deepest aspirations, you’ll need to become a different person. Embrace that process.
4. Fear is irrelevant
The fact that you are afraid of doing something doesn’t mean you can’t do it or shouldn’t do it. Your fear of rejection, failure, loss, or loneliness doesn’t need to control you. Let your aspirations speak louder than your fears, and move forward resolutely.
Your fears don’t matter; your aspirations do.
5. I am not my thoughts
Through the ongoing practice of meditation we discover, experientially, that we are not our thoughts. We are also not our emotions. We are the awareness who witnesses them, yet is not defined by them.
This fact, when thoroughly internalized, brings great freedom and inner peace.
6. Life is a dream
Many spiritual traditions speak of life as being a dream. This is something that can be realized from deep reflection and meditation. Once this secret is known, you may choose to fully detach from everything, since nothing matters, or you may choose to engage playfully, with a sense of freedom and awe. I chose the latter.
7. Awareness is the catalyst for growth
Develop full awareness of your mental patterns, emotional patterns, and impulses. If you engage in habits that you wish you wouldn’t, do so with full awareness and radical self-honesty. Study your mind and your life as a curious scientist. Get to know your demons intimately.
Do this day after day, and you shall find that this awareness itself will make you outgrow your limitations.
8. Contentment is true wealth
When you are content, there is a sense of abundance—or at least of “enoughness”. That state of mind is something that is cultivated from within. No accumulation of wealth, pleasures, or recognition can buy it.
9. Develop all aspects of yourself
Are your analytical skills strong? Great; now seek to develop your heart and intuition.
Are you more artistic by nature? Great; now seek to develop structure and logic.
The key message is: cultivate virtues that are the opposite of what comes naturally to you.
It is fun to grow in the things that we like, to focus on what we are good at, and to play to our strengths. It is also likely that your aspirations will be found in that zone.
However, if you don’t embrace other lines of development, then certain doors will remain forever closed for you. Your life may become narrower than it needs to.
10. You need to make sacrifices
To become your greater self you will need to sacrifice your lesser self. To focus on a bigger goal you’ll need to let go of smaller goals. To get what you want, you will need to do some things that you don’t want.
The more you sacrifice in pursuit of your ideal, the more energy you generate—and the more fulfilled you will be by the end result.
Mind & Heart Lessons
11. Determination is key
Any journey gets much easier when you are fully determined to complete it. All obstacles will eventually be overcome when you have unmovable determination.
It is only when you are fully determined that you see your best self in action. Without it, even if you have all the right habits in place, you’ll only be going through the motions and won’t go very far.
12. Full ownership
Taking full responsibility for your whole life is a sign of maturity. It is also the first step in self-empowerment, for you can never change something that you don’t take responsibility for.
13. Be true to yourself
Know who you are, and what you want—then be true to that. Lean on your strengths, even if others will envy you; protect your space, even when you are being shamed for doing it; pursue your interests, even if they are judged to be weird; state your opinions, even if they are unpopular.
We may feel pulled to prioritize acceptance, recognition, and belonging on top of our authenticity. Yet the social benefits we get from this will feel meaningless once we realize that we no longer know who we are.
14. You can’t argue with self-doubt
The voice of self-doubt is smart and cunning. It will always give you reasons to doubt yourself and can easily dissipate whatever confidence and motivation you manage to gather.
You can’t beat this voice at its own game. You can’t convince this party-pooper that it is wrong. You can’t beat it with arguments and self-talk. Instead, you overcome it with faith—unwavering faith in yourself.
Faith is more powerful than reason. It accepts no counter-argument and will remain unmovable in the midst of every storm.
15. Letting go is freedom
Master the art of letting go, and nothing in the universe will be able to bind you. Whatever is causing you suffering will become powerless if you let it be, and let it go.
16. Emotion is more powerful than thought
If your thoughts are telling you to go right, and your emotions are telling you to go left, most of the time you will go left. This doesn’t mean that we need to control our emotions with cold reason and facts. Though that is a popular ideal in many schools of thought in spirituality and personal development, it is not the way of the higher mind.
The higher mind includes reason and emotion. They are both part of the human experience, and they both have a higher aspect and a lower aspect. For achieving your aspirations, however, you can get more energy and motivation by learning to fully harness the power of your emotions.
17. Your strengths are also your weaknesses
Every virtue casts a shadow. If you have patience, you may not be very energetic. If you are energetic, you may not be very patient, and you may be impulsive. If you are compassionate and considered, you may struggle with boundaries; conversely, if you are assertive and tough, you may not be very kind or considerate.
Look at your top strengths, and you will also find your top weaknesses. Working on these will feel extremely difficult and unnatural, but they are the things that will most move the needle in your life.
18. Tame your demons
We all have them. They are the parts in us that, when in control, make us do things that we later regret. If you want to live a happy and fulfilling life, you must learn how to tame them—through either awareness or willpower.
19. Being at peace is more important than being right
A tough lesson to learn for a person like me, a man of words and someone who values truth. In pragmatic terms, however, being right is often not the most valuable thing. When it comes at the cost of wearing out relationships, or becoming pessimistic and demoralized, it is just not worth it.
20. Stories are more important than facts
The way you internalize events is more important than the events themselves. The story you tell yourself about what happened is what happened. For you, that is the building block of your reality. It is how the event will shape you.
Therefore, pay close attention to the stories you are telling yourself—they are shaping your reality and your identity. If they are not helpful, deconstruct them and replace them with something that is.
