These Two Morning Habits Changed My Life6 min read

What would it be like for you to start your day with focus and centeredness? No messages. No noise. No news. Just you and your purpose.

The way we start things matters. The way we start our day matters—a lot. Your first hour is your most sacred. Waste it, and you’ve given the world permission to steer your life.

If you start your day by snoozing, procrastinating, reading news, scrolling through social media, or even doing shallow work, you will not feel that great. You are teaching your brain to live a reactive life, to do what is easy before what is purposeful. You are filling your mind, and your life, with things that are ultimately meaningless, although they’re engaging.

Imagine, instead, if you start your day in a radically different way.

  • You wake up on time—instead of snoozing. This gives you that sense of being ahead, of having extra time, of being in control of your life. You are the type of person who does what you decide to do, even when it’s difficult.
  • You plan your day, meditate, exercise—instead of consuming social media content. This sends a clear message to your brain: ”I’m a creator, not a consumer. I live inside out, not outside in. I value what is slow and deep, rather than what is quick and shallow”.
  • You practice your most important habits—instead of wasting time. This makes you feel more in control. You feel like you are actually making progress toward your aspirations, every morning, before the day even begins.

Most people who come to me for coaching want, among other things, support establishing a solid morning routine—one that is consistent, dependable, and rewarding.

To make that happen, you will need to adopt what I call the Offline Morning. In my years of coaching, I’ve found this is often the most powerful tweak for transforming your mornings. Whether you prefer tight structure or creative free-flow in your mornings, starting the day offline can be tremendously impactful for your aspirations.

The Offline Morning

What exactly do I mean by offline morning? Putting your phone in airplane mode when you go to bed at night, and leaving it that way until you finish your morning routine.

This simple tweak removes the source of most of your distractions, procrastination, and interruptions: the internet. If you tend to get distracted using the web on your laptop in the morning, you can also put it in offline mode before you go to bed—and make sure to close the browser and any potentially distracting apps.

To make the Offline Morning possible, you might need some preparatory steps, such as:

  • letting other people know that you are offline until a certain time every morning
  • downloading for offline use any content that you may need for your morning routine, such as a Spotify playlist for exercise, an instructional YouTube video, or a guided meditation audio or video
  • reviewing your to-do list and calendar the night before, to make sure you are not missing anything urgent

This measure may feel extreme for some people, but I promise you—it will be extremely effective. And it’s not as hard as you think. It’s just that we have grown accustomed to being dependent on our devices.

For some people, being fully offline even for two hours is genuinely not possible because they need to be on call for the benefit of elderly parents, a sick family member, or real emergencies. In that case, you still have options. You could:

  • have a landline
  • keep a basic flip phone or old-school mobile phone just for emergency calls
  • assign a backup person, telling people who may urgently need to contact you to instead contact someone else in your household for a particular time period
  • use a smart home assistant (like Google Nest or Alexa) with calling enabled

If none of these is possible, then you can opt for the soft version of an offline morning: keeping the phone in Do Not Disturb mode, and adding the important contacts to your “always allow” list. This is not ideal, because the distractions are still just a tap away, but at least you are not getting any notifications pulling you back into the phone.

On the other end of the spectrum, if even Do Not Disturb or airplane mode is too tempting, then go a step further: keep your phone in another room and organize your morning so that you don’t need it at all. This will, of course, require that you use old-school tools such as a physical alarm device (I use this one), a paper journal or planner, etc. You will lose in convenience, but you will gain in focus, time, and energy.

Implementing the Offline Morning is something that I recommend to almost all of my clients, and it’s a key factor that allows them to start their day in a more focused, mindful, and purposeful manner.

Going Beyond the Morning Routine: No MESS Before 10 a.m.

Taking this principle to the next level, I’ve personally found great benefit in implementing what I call No MESS Before 10 a.m. in my own life. For me it is actually no MESS before 11 a.m., but I know that would be too radical for most people.

Once your morning routine is complete, but before you open the floodgates of digital input, you commit to No MESS until at least 10 a.m. MESS is an acronym for:

  • Messaging
  • Email
  • Search
  • Social Media

I don’t have any social media apps on my phone at all, so for me the final S represents “Shallow Work”. Shallow work refers to low-impact, low-focus tasks like checking email, searching random things, or running errands—activities that feel productive but don’t really move the needle.

No MESS means that your morning routine has finished, and you are back online, but instead of immediately opening up all channels of communication and flooding your mind with information, you focus on completing a few key tasks first.

This way, when it’s time for you to deal with email and messages, you have already made progress on things that matter to you even more. You will be much more satisfied with your day, your goals will advance more quickly, and your mental health will be protected.

You Can Do It

Clients often tell me: “I thought I couldn’t do it, but I actually don’t miss the phone. This has been a game-changer!”

Having helped many people implement these (and similar) strategies, I know the resistances you may already be facing. I know that voice that says, “This would be great, but I can’t, because __________.”

The truth is, it is almost certain that you can implement these practices. Even if your work or family situation demands you to be online from the very the beginning of your day, I encourage to you to implement whatever steps you can take to come close to the Offline Morning ideal. I assure you that taking those steps will still make a great difference!

Will there be withdrawal symptoms? In my experience, initially you may feel a little restless or awkward about it, as you are not getting the easy dopamine hits you are used to—but that only happens in the first couple of days. And even then, this initial discomfort is easily offset by the greater sense of wellbeing, focus, clarity, and purpose that you will feel. Chances are, you’ll find yourself enjoying your days more—and maybe even your life more.

Here is my challenge for you: try it for one week, starting from tomorrow. You may feel scared at first, but the sacrifice is actually not as big as you think, and the rewards are totally worth it. Own your morning, own your life.
